On an early November afternoon, I arrived in Moab Utah and decided on a short hike up Portal Overlook Trail. Portal Overlook Trail is an approximately 6 mile out and back trail that ascends over 900’ in elevation along the west side of the Colorado River Portal to provide views of the Moab Valley, Arches National park, the La Sal Mountains and the Colorado river. Moab is known for its dramatic scenery, being on the edge of both Arches and Canyonlands National Parks. But many other hiking opportunities such as this exist in the area outside of the national parks.
