Description
In the Norris Geyser Basin in Yellowstone National Park (Wyoming, USA), you can see bacterial mats ranging in color including brown, green, yellow and orange. The bacterial mats are formed by microorganisms called thermophiles, or heat lovers, that make their homes in the hydrothermal features of Yellowstone. Although individually they are too small to be seen with the naked eye, so many are grouped together in the park's hydrothermal features that they appear as mats of color. Different types of thermophiles not only live at different specific temperatures but require the extreme temperatures to thrive and cannot tolerate temperatures much outside a particular range. You can see gradations of color where the water temperature changes slightly the farther it gets from the source and one group of thermophiles is replaced by another. The algae responsible for the bright green color in Norris Geyser Basin thrives in water with temperatures of 104 – 131 degrees F and a pH of 0-4. This is not water you want to dip your toes in! They nevertheless form a very colorful landscape.
