Description
A wonderful treat when in Istanbul is a day cruise up the Bosphorus Strait. The ferry is a very efficient way to travel in Istanbul, so efficient in fact that you don't want to delay getting on and off....you might get run over by the locals. This is one of the towns along the way. In addition to separating two continents (Europe and Asia), the Bosphorus Strait serves as Istanbul's main highway. A never-ending stream of vessels, from little fishing vessels to gigantic rusted oil tankers to luxury cruise ships, sails up and down this corridor. The oil tankers are actually frightening in their enormous size when you are traveling on the ferry! This 19 mile long waterway is one of the busiest waterways in the world, connecting the Black Sea on the north to the Sea of Marmara on the south. It is the only outlet to the Mediterranean for Russia, and the only route to any sea for other countries on the Black Sea such as Romania, Bulgaria, Ukraine, and Georgia.
