Description

Although partially ruined because of damage caused by earthquakes and stone-robbers, the Colosseum is still an iconic symbol of Imperial Rome. The Colosseum was commissioned around CE 70-72 by Emperor Vespasian as a gift to the Roman people. In CE 80, Vespasian’s son Titus opened the Colosseum–officially known as the Flavian Amphitheater–with 100 days of games, including gladiatorial combats and wild animal fights. The Colosseum fell into disuse after several centuries, and was damaged by lightning and earthquakes in medieval times and, even more severely, by vandalism. All the marble seats and decorative materials disappeared, as the site was treated as little more than a quarry for more than 1,000 years. Preservation began in the 19th century, with notable efforts led by Pius VIII, and a restoration project was undertaken in the 1990s. To say it is a major tourist attraction today is an understatement, as it ranges from crowded to mobbed for all but a few hours of the day! http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/91
