Description
On our first day in Quito Equador, it was cloudy so that we were not able to see Cotopaxi, an active volcano in the Andes Mountains about 50 km (31 mi) south of the city. But the day of our visit to the nearby Antisana Ecological Reserve, there were blue skies and fluffy clouds and magnificent views of the mountain! Cotopaxi is the second highest summit in Ecuador, reaching a height of 5,897 m (19,347 ft) and is one of the world's highest volcanoes. This viewpoint was in a highland plain at an altitude of 12470’. Since 1738, Cotopaxi has erupted more than 50 times, resulting in the creation of numerous valleys formed by lahars (mudflows) around the volcano. The last eruption lasted from August 2015 to January 2016. It is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire.
