Description
It was difficult if not impossible to discover any information about the history of Cottonwood South Dakota’s jail. But it’s fun to imagine. I imagine….first that there couldn’t have been that many criminals in the area. I guess with a heyday population of 191 the odds are low of so many criminals as to overtax the jail. I also imagine….the lack of tools, imagination, and/or impulse, plus the social ostracism for criminal behavior that inhibited criminals from escaping. Or perhaps, they’d rather stay in jail rather than face a lynch mob. In today’s world, it would take 5 seconds to escape from such a low-security place! I like to picture the law enforcement officer lounging, boots up on a stool, as he ‘guards’ the jail and its inhabitants. I imagine the criminal is likely someone he knows and they are jabbering on about how their families are doing. What pictures and stories come to your mind? Cottonwood South Dakota is on Highway 14, east of Wall and Rapid City.
