Description
I had a few hours to kill in Madrid Spain waiting for a train so I decided to walk over to the Parque del Retiro and check out the Chrystal Palace. Located in the center of the Buen Retiro Park, it was modelled on London's Crystal Palace. It was built around 36 years after its London counterpart in 1887, and designed by the architect Ricardo Velazquez Bosco who was responsible for another building in the park, the Palacio de Velazquez. The Palacio de Cristal, in the shape of a Greek cross, is made almost entirely of glass set in an iron framework on a brick base, and decorated with ceramics. Its domed roof makes the structure over 22 metres high. The glass palace was created to house exotic flora and fauna as part of an exhibition on the Philippines, which was then still a Spanish colony. It is no longer used as a greenhouse, and is currently used for art exhibits. When I was there it had an amazing sound exhibit called 'The Ship is Going Under, The Ice is Breaking Through'. People were asked to be silent inside to allow the sound to echo and wash over you. It was a wonderful exhibit!
