Description
Viewed from the self-isolation of during the pandemic of 2020, it is bittersweet to remember this lovely hike on a sunny day in Cuenca Spain the previous year. I was viewing the town from a location out of the frame to the left when I noticed that there seemed to be some trails running below the rocky cliffs of the town. I thought that might be a fun little hike especially on such a beautiful sunny day. The low angle of the winter sun cast long shadows well into the late morning making for lovely photos. After about an hour’s hike, I arrived at the hilltop overlook only to discover a huge parking lot and lots of tourists who had driven there to take a quick look and a photo! All I could do was laugh at how, if I’d wanted to, I could have taken the bus to the overlook or even had an easier walk up the streets. I keep telling myself it was more fun the way I did it. Cuenca Spain has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1996 and is most famous for Las Casas Colgadas or ‘hanging houses’. This viewing point high above the Huecar Gorge at the Barrio de Castillo gives you a fabulous view of this historic cliffside town. The entire Huecar Gorge was originally lined with ‘hanging houses’, built in the 1500s, of which only 3 remain today. They are built on and over a rock formation, with the balconies hanging out over the cliffside. One can be clearly seen in the photo as the first house on the left. While Las Casas Colgadas are one of the most photographed and famous places in Cuenca, when they are seen in the context of the entire panorama, you see what a tiny part of the historic town they are. Nevertheless, the hanging houses are the most emblematic spot in Cuenca. They were restored in the 20th century and in an irony of ironies, one now houses an art museum sporting an interior with clean lines and featuring abstract and modern art!
