Description
Cuenca Spain has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1996. A walk across the Puente de San Pablo (Saint Paul Bridge; the red structure on the left) to the other side of the Huecar Gorge gives you a fabulous view of this historic cliffside town. The entire Huecar Gorge was originally lined with ‘hanging houses’ (Las Casas Colgadas), built in the 1500s, of which only 3 remain today. They can be seen in the panorama way off to the left with the brown balconies. They are built on and over a rock formation, with the balconies hanging out over the cliffside. While Las Casas Colgadas are one of the most photographed and famous places in Cuenca, when they are seen in the context of the entire panorama, you see what a tiny part of the historic town they are. Nevertheless, the hanging houses are the most emblematic spot in Cuenca. They were restored in the 20th century and in an irony of ironies, they now house an art museum sporting an interior with clean lines and featuring abstract and modern art!

Wow...that is quite a shot from the bridge if you are afraid of heights. Impressive!
