Description
University of Florida football fans make a pilgrimage of sorts when they are on campus to see the statues of the football team's Heisman Trophy winners (the other two are Tim Tebow, check out the photo 'Frozen in Time', and Steve Spurrier). Danny Wuerffel was an American college football quarterback at the University of Florida in Gainesville FL when he won the 1996 Heisman Trophy and the 1996 national football championship. Wuerffel threw for more than 3,600 yards and 39 touchdowns in the 1996 season. One of the most decorated players in Florida's football history, he was a key member of the Gators teams that won four consecutive Southeastern Conference (SEC) titles between 1993 and 1996. He led the Gators to the Bowl Alliance national championship game following the 1995 season, but ultimately lost 6224 to the Nebraska Cornhuskers in the Fiesta Bowl. Wuerffel won the 1996 Heisman Trophy, as the outstanding college football player in America, while quarterbacking the Gators into their second consecutive Bowl Alliance national championship game with help from teammates Fred Taylor at running back, Reidel Anthony, Ike Hilliard and Jacquez Green at wide receiver, and Jeff Mitchell on the offensive line. Wuerffel and the Gators won the 1996 national championship in decisive fashion by defeating the Florida State Seminoles 5220 in the Sugar Bowl. Wuerffel was honored, along with two other University of Florida Heisman trophy winners, with life-sized statues outside the University of Florida stadium. The statues, which weigh between 1,700 and 2,000 pounds, were placed on the west side of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium near the skybox entrance. They were paid for by private donations. At the unveiling of the statues, Wuerffel said "When do you ever think growing up that you'll have a statue somewhere where people will look at it and have great memories?" Wuerffel said. "It's even more special being next to two guys that I love and admire in my coach, Steve Spurrier, and my friend, Tim Tebow. That even makes it more special for me."
