Description
The low winter sun was just peeking above the trees as I arrived at the famous Pont del Diable, or Devil's Bridge, near Tarragona Spain. This section of the aqueduct is only a fragment of a much larger conduit that was used to supply water to the city of Tarragona. Built in the 1st century BCE, the Pont del Diable brought water to the city of Tarragona from 15 miles away. The portion constituting what is today also called the Les Ferreres aqueduct is 217 metres long and nearly 2 metres wide, reaching a maximum height of 27 metres. The upper tier is comprised of 25 arches, and the lower tier of 11, each with a span of 5.90 metres. You can walk along the top of the aqueduct across the small valley, which is a thrill for experiencing history up close. Besides a link to the Roman Empire, the aqueduct was used into the 18th century to bring water to Tarragona, showing the perfection of Roman architecture. The bridge is located 4 kilometers north of the city and it is part of the Archaeological Ensemble of Tarraco (listed as a UNESCO's World Heritage Site since 2000).
