Description
There’s more to do at Devils Tower National Monument in Wyoming (USA) than gape at the giant rock formation. There are a few hikes that you can do, including a 1.3-mile paved trail at the base of the tower and a 3.8-mile loop farther out from the tower with one of the views seen here. By far, this trail to me was the most interesting. The four ‘sides’ around the tower seem to have four totally different habitats so that just when you find yourself wishing for something different to look at, there it is! I chose to hike the trail in a counterclockwise direction which saved some of the prettiest views, like this one on the north side, for last. The site received the name ‘Devils Tower’ as a result of a US Army geologic expedition in 1875. This was despite several maps and other sources labeling the formation as Bear Lodge, the English translation of a Lakota name. The name remains controversial today and many want the original name restored. What is not controversial is the uniqueness of the site, which led to its protection as a U.S. forest reserve in 1892 and the first United States National Monument in 1906, by President Theodore Roosevelt. Millions today enjoy the legacy of preservation and conservation established in previous generations. Similarly, today we are challenged to continue this legacy for future generations.
