Description
Like most photographers, I eagerly anticipated my visit to ‘Diamond Beach’ along the South Coast of Iceland. Here, icebergs which break off the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier into the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, float down a short river and out to sea, and are then pummeled by the waves and washed back up onto the black sand beach. It’s the perfect place for some long exposure photography. However, our guide went a bit overboard in warning us of the dangers….getting knocked over by waves and losing your camera…so that I was a bit petrified before we got there. However, it turned out to be the most fun you can have while wearing Wellingtons duct-taped to your snow pants. Watch the waves, find the perfect set of ice chunks for a good photo, watch the waves, try to level your camera and tripod as the waves wash the sand out from underneath the tripod feet, watch the waves. Did I mention watch the waves? Don’t turn your back on the waves. When you think you have the perfect set of ice chunks for a good photo, a big wave will come along and moves them all around. Be prepared to start all over again! And if you are there long enough and/or are far enough into the water, you are bound to get hit by some of the chunks as the waves shuffle them around. I remember saying “Ow! Ow! Ow!” as some big-ish chunks slammed into my ankle. But….I stood my ground and held my camera and tripod up out of the splash zone. The ice chunks take on many forms and colors, ranging from transparent, to white, to the most amazing blue, and even to black. They stand in stark contrast to the black sand of the beach.
