Description
You might say the Church of San Giuseppe is hidden in plain sight in Orvieto Italy. Located on Via del Duomo, one of the main tourist streets, it is hidden behind a bare and simple exterior consisting only of a plain portal in an equally plain stone façade. There is no grand piazza, just two short steps up from the street. The only hint that a church lies behind is the small cross above the door. I had probably already walked past it a half dozen times and the doors had been closed so I didn’t particularly notice it. However, I was walking past it early one morning and the door was open with only the lighted statue was visible from outside. It was a bit mysterious and I felt like I needed to tiptoe in, which I did! In big cathedrals with many visitors, there is not the absolute reverent silence that I found in this small church. The stone was laid for the foundation in 1665 and was dedicated to the Nazareth carpenter St Joseph who had been chosen as a patron saint of Orvieto in 1652. Construction was not completed until 1685. A large celebration takes place every year here and on the square outside on March 19, St Joseph’s Day. THE REST OF THE STORY: Yes, I did take some photos on the inside but I quietly placed my backpack on the floor, slowly and quietly unfolded by tripod, and ever so quietly put my camera on the tripod. Then, CLICK! The sound of the shutter shattered the silence! I looked around guiltily…
