Description
During the daytime, the Door of Forgiveness is the main entryway used to access the Patio of the Oranges and then the Mosque-Cathedral in Cordoba Spain. As a result, it is always open. Unluckily for me, there was some construction scaffolding just inside the door so a daytime photo was out of the question. I was heading somewhere else early one morning when I passed by the closed door and realized this was my chance! I did have to back up against the building across the narrow street and jostle with delivery trucks and handcarts and delivery people all trying to get their morning’s work done before the tourists arrive! One website says that this door is one of the most important doors in the ceremonial life of the Cathedral (but doesn’t say why) and was completed in 1377. However, the current look is the result of 17th century remodeling. Above there are remains of some murals which represent Our Lady of the Assumption, flanked by Saint Michel and Saint Raphael. Each of the doors is almost 10 meters high and two meters wide. They are made of pine tree wood and covered by bronze plaques. This portal blends Christian-era friezes of saints with Islamic arches and geometrical design and is the perfect representation of the Mezquita’s multiple identities. The Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
