Mobbed by day and well past midnight, the Piazza del Duomo is deserted in the hours just before dawn. I shared the piazza with some pigeons and the street cleaners. As dawn turns to sunrise, delivery trucks are legion, trying to finish up their work before the piazza becomes a pedestrian only zone. Soon enough the crowds arrive for another day. But there is something special about the few pre-dawn minutes when you have it all to yourself! The Piazza del Duomo is located in the heart of the historic center of Florence (Tuscany, Italy). It is one of the most visited places in Europe and the world. In the center is Florence Cathedral (Il Duomo) with the famed Cupola del Brunelleschi. Giotto's Campanile is the tower on the right while the Florence Baptistery is on the left. The cathedral is one of the largest in Europe, measuring 153 m (501.97 ft) in length and 116 m (380.58 ft) in height. The bell tower is one of the showpieces of the Florentine Gothic architecture with its design by Giotto, its rich sculptural decorations and the polychrome marble encrustations. The Baptistery is one of the oldest buildings in the city, built between 1059 and 1128.
