Description
Rome Italy is filled with obelisks (13, according to one website), many of them brought to Rome from what would have been exotic locales. Such is the case of the obelisk in St Peter’s Square, which was brought to Rome from Egypt by Caligula in 37 CE. It is called the Vatican Obelisk and sometimes Caligula’s Obelisk. Together with the Renaissance dome of St Peter’s Basilica, it dominates the Vatican Square. It is the only ancient Egyptian obelisk in Rome to have remained standing since Roman times, though only since 1586 at its current location. Little is known about the obelisk since it is uninscribed. It attained modern fame as one of the key locations in the Dan Brown novel ‘Angels and Demons’.
