Description
If you step outside the tunnel of Torii gates at the Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto Japan, you get a different perspective about the extent of the gates. Although there are thousands of these gates at the shrine and this is only a small segment of the roughly 4 km pathway, you get the feel for the gates stretching into infinity. Fushimi Inari Shrine is Kyoto’s most important Shinto shrine and one of the most popular attractions for foreign visitors to Japan. The shrine dates from 816. The function of a torii is to mark the entrance to a sacred space so that the path leading to a Shinto shrine is always straddled by one or more torii. Inari is the god of rice, sake, and abundant crops. Over time, Inari came also to be the patron of business, merchants and manufacturers as having good income was a sign of good crops of a sort. The custom to donate a torii started in the Edo period (1603 – 1868) to get a wish to become true or to thank for a wish that became true. Good luck finding out how many torii there are. It’s either ‘roughly a thousand’ or ‘thousands of them’ or ‘over 5000’ or ‘over 10,000’. Take your pick, or just enjoy the walk!
