Description
It's called Angel Caido or Fallen Angel. It's a statue located in the gardens of the expansive Parque del Buen Retiro in Madrid Spain. It depicts Lucifer at the moment he is cast out of Heaven, as inspired by a passage in John Milton's Paradise Lost. The statue is renowned equally for its discordant subject matter, as well as the sculptor's ability to imbue a sense of tension and anguish in his rendering of Satan. Many of the tour books say that the Fallen Angel statue is 'arguably the only public statue in the world dedicated to the devil himself.' Although is evoked scandal at the time of its creation, the dramatic sculpture first made in plaster proved to be an artistic success, obtaining the First Medal at the Spanish National Fine Arts Exhibition in 1878, and was later cast in bronze for the grand Exposition Universelle, better known as the third Paris World's Fair in 1879. It was inaugurated at its current location in 1885.
