Description
Dusk presents a special moment at the Oklahoma City Memorial in Oklahoma City, OK, USA. Looking west across the reflecting pool, you look through the gate representing the First Moment of Recovery. An explosion at 9:02 am on April 19, 1995 killed 168 people. The explosion was set off by Timothy McVeigh who detonated a rental truck filled with explosives in front of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building. By 9:03, people were faced with the grim reality of the magnitude of the loss. But this gate represents hope for the future, the fact that we always have to move forward. This memorial was constructed on the location to honor the victims, survivors, rescuers, and all who were affected by the event. In a larger sense, we across the country and around the world were affected by the event, and you will find tears welling up, maybe even running down your cheeks, when you step on the grounds. Nearly 25 years on, the wounds are still there. The symbolism of the many facets of the memorial is powerful. This is one of the two Gates of Time, the other inscribed with the time 9:01 which was the last moment of peace. The inscriptions of time on the gates face inward toward one another and the Reflecting Pool. The outside of each gate bears the inscription: “We come here to remember Those who were killed, those who survived and those changed forever. May all who leave here know the impact of violence. May this memorial offer comfort, strength, peace, hope and serenity.” The memorial is located in downtown Oklahoma City on the former site of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building, which was destroyed in the 1995 bombing. The national memorial was authorized on October 9, 1997, by President Bill Clinton's signing of the Oklahoma City National Memorial Act of 1997. It was administratively listed on the National Register of Historic Places the same day.
