Description
As I neared Devils Tower National Monument in Wyoming (USA), I saw a sign for a roadside turnout for a scenic view of the rock formation. And WOW! Good thing there was a turnout or there would probably be scores of accidents with people stopping for photos! Devils Tower is not one among many, it sits towering alone above the surrounding plain and the first views you get are just spectacular. On this day, it was overcast on the eastern horizon so that Devils Tower sat in sullen shade. But as I was getting ready to leave the roadside turnout for the park, the sun broke through a small patch of clouds, throwing a beam of light on the eastern face. The first documented Caucasians visitors to this area were part of an 1859 expedition to Yellowstone. Sixteen years later, an Office of Indian Affairs scientific survey party coined the name Devils Tower. Recognizing its unique characteristics, the United States Congress designated the area a U.S. forest reserve in 1892. Devils Tower became the first United States National Monument, established on September 24, 1906, by President Theodore Roosevelt. The 1977 movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind used the formation as a plot element and as the location of its climactic scenes.
