Description
Most people go to Fisherman's Bastion on Castle Hill in Budapest Hungary to get a great view of the spectacular Parliament building across the river, and the whole of the Danube River stretched below from Margaret Island and Pest to the east and the Gellert Hill to the south. But it has its own Disneyesque charm, especially at night. Fisherman's Bastion is a terrace built in neo-Gothic and neo-Romanesque style on the Castle hill around Matthias Church. While it may seem ancient, and while tourists may want it to be ancient, it was designed and built between 1895 and 1902. Its seven towers represent the seven Magyar tribes that settled in the Carpathian Basin in 896. The Bastion takes its name from the guild of fishermen that was responsible for defending this stretch of the city walls in the Middle Ages so in this regard it has historical roots. FUN FACT: It was featured as a Pit Stop on the sixth season of American TV show The Amazing Race.
