Description
Fishing on the Golden Horn. Fishermen abound in Istanbul. From the Galata Bridge and from every ferry dock and concrete sidewalk along the Bosphorus fishermen bait their hooks and cast off. Any crack of empty shoreline is fair game for anyone with a rod and reel. The Bosphorus is part of a unique interplay of ecosystems that historically supplied the people of Istanbul with a favorite past time and precious nutrition. Major European river systems empty into the Black Sea, at the northern end of the Bosphorus, supplying fresh water, nutrients and a harvest of fish. The Black Sea is rich in fish compared to the Mediterranean, and fishing was one of the great pillars of Greek civilizaton. The difference in temperature and salinity between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean insure a strong current brimming with fish along the Bosphorous.
