Artist's Description
Fiumelatte owes its fame to its identification as the shortest river in Italy, having a length of about 250 m. It flows from a cavity in the Bergamo Alps into Lake Como, just south of Varenna. Aside from the short length, another peculiarity is its annual intermittency: it usually dries up in the middle of October and reappears in the second half of March. Luckily I visited in May so that I could witness the raging flow. This intermittent phenomenon could imply that the river is the vent of an unexplored underground cavity in the mountains, which gets periodically filled. Da Vinci described the river as having ‘inestimable uproar and noise’. The river can be viewed from the lakeside in the town of Fiumelatte, or after a short hike, from its source up the mountainside.
