Description
All I remember about this day at Five Mile Point Lighthouse was how cold and windy it was!. You expect lighthouses to be a lonely outpost or on a rocky coast. This one is in Lighthouse Point Park, 5 miles from downtown New Haven CT! It was strung with lights perhaps for the holidays, or maybe it's always that way to look festive. It seemed a sad fate for a once proud lighthouse. The park was being decorated for a holiday light show and parking was quite restricted. But since the park was absolutely deserted and it was so bitterly cold, I drove up to the lighthouse anyway, parked, quickly took some photos, and jumped back in the car. Completed in 1847, the new tower, painted white, stands 65 feet tall. The exterior is made of East Haven sandstone, the interior lined with New Haven brick, and the 74 steps leading to the lantern room are carved from solid granite. The new light, at a focal plane of 97 feet above sea, could be seen 10 nautical miles on a clear day, shining from a system of twelve lamps with 21-inch reflectors. The lamp system was upgraded to a fourth-order Fresnel lens in 1855. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.
