Description
The fog set in during the drive up to Moraine Lake but I had come that far, I figured I may as well finish the drive. Although the view in the fog isn't the 'spectacular' view that everyone comes to see, there is a magic about the quiet fog of the morning and the absolute stillness of the water. A lone photographer waits atop the rock pile hoping to glimpse the million dollar view. Moraine Lake near Lake Louise in Banff National Park (Alberta Canada) is one of the several impossibly aqua blue glacial lakes in the Canadian Rockies. The lake is situated in the Valley of the Ten Peaks, at an elevation of approximately 6,183 feet (1,885 m). The surrounding peaks of the Wenkchemna Range all top out at over 10,000' (~3000 m). Its distinctive color, which can be seen here just a little, is due to the refraction of light off fine-grained, silt-sized particles of rock, generated by the grinding of bedrock by the glaciers and deposited in the lake on a continual basis.
