Description
Fort Pickering Light, also called Winter Island Light, was #3 on my lighthouse tour north of Boston up into Maine. There is a substantial parking fee to get into the park, which the attendant halved for me when I said I only wanted some pictures of the lighthouse. This was quite a scenic location on a pretty summer day and I found a painter working on this exact scene while the locals sunbathed and relaxed. This lighthouse was established in 1871 to help mariners approaching Salem Harbor. The Coast Guard left the lighthouse in 1969 and it fell to ruin until local citizens restored it. It was reactivated as a private aid to navigation in 1983 and converted to solar power in 1994. It is now part of the Winter Island Historic District and Archeological District, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.
