Description
Neptune fights a giant octopus in the Fountain of Neptune (Fontana del Nettuno) in Piazza Navona Rome, Italy. The original 16th century fountain served mainly as a source of water for drinking and washing and consisted of the basin only. Nineteenth-century infrastructure developments reduced dependence on urban fountains for drinking and washing purposes but increased their visual and political importance. The statuary was thus added in the late 19th century with the center sculpture featuring Neptune with his trident and wrestling with an octopus.
