Description
Perhaps everyone’s favorite myth about Bernini’s Fountain of the Four Rivers in Piazza Navona in Rome Italy is that the river god of Rio de la Plata is tumbling backward in shock and raising his arm to shield his eyes from the horror of his rival’s design of the façade of Sant’Agnese Church. While it isn’t true (the fountain was constructed before the church’s façade), it reminds me that some of the historical figures whom we revere were mere mortals who schemed against one another and exhibited the same rivalries that we see today among our public figures! The design of the fountain itself includes three other river gods, in all representing the four continents that were known at the time. The Rio de la Plata river god represents the Americas, while the three other gods represent Europe, Asia and Africa.
