Visiting the Franz Josef glacier on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island is definitely an adrenaline pumping experience. Sheer magnificence surrounds you as you first stand on the glacier while waiting for the tour group to assemble. After that, you slide through narrow crevasses, squeeze between towering walls of ice, crawl through blue ice tunnels, or hang out in an ice cave for a few hours. If you drop your lens cap or any other item and it rolls away from you…well, just forget it! Falling into a crevasse is not on the top 10 list of things to do on your holiday. Ten to fifteen thousand years ago, Franz Josef’s cloak of ice is believed to have reached from the mountains right to the sea but today its face is 19 km from the sea and accessible only by helicopter. Franz Josef Glacier / Kā Roimata o Hine Hukatere is a 12 km (7.5 mi) long temperate maritime glacier located in Westland Tai Poutini National Park. Together with the Fox Glacier 20 km (12 mi) to the south, and a third glacier, it descends from the Southern Alps to less than 300 metres (980 ft) above sea level. The area surrounding the two glaciers is part of Te Wahipounamu, a World Heritage Site park.
