Description
You don’t have to go far in the town of Franz Josef on the South Island of New Zealand to see spectacular scenery. Most likely, you can see beautiful mountains right from your hotel room. If you want a more unobstructed view, you might have to walk or drive a short distance. In any case, it’s all around you! This view is taken from near a bridge that leads into town from the south so whichever way you are heading you can’t miss it. Behind the foreground hills but in front of the more distant peaks is the Franz Josef glacier. Not too many decades ago it was visible from this spot, as memorialized on a 1946 9d 'Peace' stamp. The stamp was named 'A Spirit of Thankfulness' and was part of an issue which commemorated the end of World War II. At the time the glacier was visible in the but by 1954 had disappeared from view. The glacier reappeared in the view in 1997 but has since retreated again.
