Description

The lava heron is a species endemic to the Galapagos Islands of Equador. This one was photographed in the mangroves lining a beach along Darwin bay on Genovesa Island, a pristine uninhabited island. This beach area contains an abundance of seabirds, nesting areas, and tide pools. These small herons live and nest along the lava rock coastlines, saltwater lagoons, and mangrove forests.
