Description
The Galapagos Short-eared Owl is an endemic species in the archipelago and is a smaller subspecies of the short-eared owls that inhabit the other continents. They have hooked beaks, sharp talons, large yellow/orange eyes, and of course short tufted ears. Their coloring is darker than mainland short eared owls, which is highly effective against the backdrop of dark brown lava rocks. On Genovesa Island they are found among the lava rocks up on the clifftops but due to their coloration they are very hard to spot! Luckily, our great naturalist spotted several of them. Even with his help, it would take us several more minutes before we could pick them out!
