Description
Can you imagine a modern shopping mall being built with such lavishness?! From atop Il Duomo, the cathedral in Milan Italy, you get a wonderful view of Milan's premier shopping center, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. The galleria is the pantheon dedicated to the god of luxury consumerism! In contrast to many modern shopping malls, as much effort was dedicated to the extravagant beauty of the structure as to the richness of the goods within. Milan's Galleria is one of the world's oldest shopping malls. It was designed in 1861 and built between 1865 and 1877. The arcade is covered by an arching glass and cast iron roof, a popular design for 19th-century arcades, with a glass dome in the center. Housed within a four-story double arcade in central Milan, the Galleria is named after Vittorio Emanuele II, the first king of the Kingdom of Italy.
