Description
Pillars of stone wash over you in a giant static wave as your walk under the portico of the washerwoman in Parc Guell in Barcelona Spain. Parc Guell was designed by Antoni Gaudi in the early 20th century to be a housing development far out of the city center of Barcelona. In that respect it was a spectacular failure. But today it exists as a municipal garden. This portico backs onto the retaining wall of an upper roadway and is made from unhewn local stone to integrate them closely into the landscape. Gaudi's structures always echo natural forms, with columns like tree trunks supporting branching vaulting, and the curves of vaulting and alignment of sloping columns designed in an the inverted catenary arch shape forming perfect compression structures. When he was awarded his architecture degree, one professor wondered if they had just awarded the degree to a fool or a genius.
