Description
The view of Ghent's waterfront from St Michael's Bridge (Sint-Michielsbrug) was so enchanting that we walked down the steps onto the quayside where I spent a VERY long time taking photos! This side of the quay shows some of the ornately decorated guild houses and I just couldn't get enough of them! And the lifestyle is captivating.....all the cafes on the riverside where you can enjoy the sun with some food and drink, the wide quay for walking, just wonderful! And we had glorious weather for our visit. Ghent is the capital and largest city of the East Flanders province. The city started as a settlement at the confluence of the Rivers Scheldt and Lys and in the Middle Ages became one of the largest and richest cities of northern Europe as a result of the wool trade. Today it is a busy city with a port and a university.
