Description
The tour books made a big deal over the 90 steps necessary to climb to the Cathedral of Girona, Spain. But after a long and steep and hard hike the previous day in Montserrat, all I could think was 'That's IT?'. In any case the climb is worth it! Also known as Catedral de Santa Maria de Girona (Cathedral of Saint Mary of Girona), Its interior includes the widest Gothic nave in the world, with a width of 22 metres (72 ft), and the second widest of any church after that of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Its construction was begun in the 11th century in Romanesque style, and continued in the 13th century in Gothic style. Of the original Romanesque edifice only the 12th-century cloister and a bell tower remain (not visible). The new bell tower (seen here), begun in 1590 and completed (with a modified design) in the 18th century, has an octagonal plan. It houses six bells, the oldest one dating to 1574. The facade is Baroque. As is usual in many European cities, the huge cathedral is squeezed into a small space in the old city, closely abutting other buildings.
