Description
A spindly savior, that is Gloucester Breakwater Light, sitting at the end of the break water near Eastern Point Light in Gloucester, MA. This light marks the Dog Bar Reef, so the light is also know as Dog Bar Breakwater light. If you are on a lighthouse hunt, you get two for price of one at this location! The Dog Bar Breakwater, extending one half mile into the mouth of the outer harbor from Eastern Point Light was first proposed in 1866 in order to reduce turbulence in the waters of the outer harbor during heavy weather. In 1866, Captain Uncle Joe Proctor, the father of the Dog Bar Breakwater, petitioned Congress for its creation, but it was not until 1894 that work on its construction began. Progress was slow, and although an extraordinary number of shipwrecks and groundings in 1898 sped it up somewhat, the breakwater was not completed until 1905. When a vessel passes this breakwater during a storm, the fury of the Atlantic subsides and the wind is cut by half. Keepers at Eastern Point Light were given the additional responsibility of caring for this lighthouse. During calm weather the walk was beautiful but during foul weather, the ice coated granite blocks could be treacherous. Lucky for me it was a nice day for a walk!

V. The black and white enhances the lonely feeling I get from this image. I like the stones leading to the light. it is interesting to see this moden lighthouse with the solar panels!
