Description
You start to get peeks of the cathedral as you walk up the narrow streets of Segovia. Literally up, since Segovia's cathedral sits in the Plaza Mayor, one of the highest points in the city. Finally you reach the Plaza Mayor and there it sits, fronting directly onto the plaza! Segovia Cathedral, or Nuestra Senora de la Asuncion y San Frutos Cathedral, is a Roman Catholic church. Begun in the 16th century but not finished until 1768, Segovia Cathedral is the last Gothic cathedral to be built in Spain. It stands on the spot where Isabella I was proclaimed Queen of Castile. Affectionately called la dama de las catedrales, Segovia Cathedral has a supremely Gothic exterior combined with a surprisingly bare interior, but contains numerous treasures. The cathedral replaces one that stood near the Alcazar but which was destroyed. The cloister from the prior cathedral was moved to the new location. The choir also still preserves the gothic choir stalls of the former cathedral. It always amazes me how the gigantic cathedrals of Europe are often right in the middle of a city, chockablock with all the other buildings. This one is no exception!
