Description
This is a slightly moodier version of my image entitled 'Granada Cathedral'. I had a tour book in Granada Spain that led me to the Cathedral of the Incarnation via a route that was designed to suddenly reveal to you the enormous facade of the cathedral. Naturally, I didn't take that route. I approached the cathedral from a small alley and plaza off to the right beyond the pink building in the photo. Realizing that it would be more fun to be surprised by my first view of the facade, I purposely didn't look back until I walked all the way down the small plaza in front of the cathedral. And WOW! There is was! Even after seeing alot of huge churches and cathedrals in Europe tucked into small places, it still amazes me! And also makes me wonder whether the enormity of these structures would inspire awe, wonder, reverence, or maybe fear, in the followers centuries ago. You can get a sense of the size by the two figures (in the shadows) on the lower right side of the image, one entering the door on the right, the other walking toward the camera also on the right along the wall. One of only two Renaissance churches in Spain, Granada's cathedral is the second-largest church in Spain (after Sevilla's). Construction of this cathedral had to await the acquisition of the Nasrid kingdom of Granada from its Muslim rulers in 1492. It was started as a Gothic church, designed to be the national church when Granada was the capital of a newly reconquered Spain. However, it had both Renaissance and Baroque elements in it by the time it was completed.
