Description
This was one of the most appealing views that I was able to get of the Monasterio de la Cartuja (or the Carthusian Monastery) in Granada Spain. This was because I arrived there way too early, before it was open for tours. I had lots of time for taking photos in the open courtyard, but even I ran out of photos before I ran out of time. So I walked back outside the courtyard and around the corner, where I saw one campus of the University of Granada, as well as this view! You don't get to see any of the monastery grounds as part of the tour, so this was particularly rewarding. The monastery charterhouse was founded in 1506; construction started ten years later, and continued for the following 300 years. Eventually, lands were confiscated from the monks in 1836 and the cloister and the cells were destroyed, a result of the Napoleonic war, and a lack of overall preservation. The outside is rather plain, but inside it is a riot of color and decoration!
