Description
A short hike from the carpark brings you to the Station Rock lookout point on Great Barrier Island, New Zealand, where you get a nearly complete panoramic view of the surrounding mountains and oceans. Surely a great reward for a small hiking investment! The view extends from Tryphena (left), the most populated area on Great Barrier Island to the Medlands beach (right). Great Barrier Island lies in the outer Hauraki Gulf of New Zealand, 100 kilometres (62 mi) north-east of central Auckland. It is the sixth-largest island of New Zealand and fourth-largest in the main chain. The majority of the island (around 60% of the total area) is administered as a nature reserve by the Department of Conservation.
