With all its varying lines and curves, it isn’t hard to find yourself photographing the Guggenheim Art Museum in Bilbao Spain from all angles and at all times of the day! This view is taken from La Salve Bridge looking down on the riverside patio of the museum with the Nervion River on the right. The sculpture Maman (the spider sculpture) in the foreground always attracts a lot of attention. Two other famed outdoor sculptures are also visible: Tall Tree and the Eye (what looks like a pile of silver reflective balls at the far end of the pool) and Tulips (the spot of color on the atrium patio). The Pedro Arrupe footbridge in the distance created a convenient way for pedestrians to cross the river. It isn’t a far stretch to say that the opening of the Guggenheim museum in Bilbao Spain singlehandedly made the city of Bilbao a must-visit destination in Spain. The city was in decline in the late 1900s as its major industries of shipbuilding, and coal and steel production became outdated. In the 1990s, the American Guggenheim foundation was in search of a location for a European museum. As unlikely as it seems, the declining city of Bilbao was chosen and in a short period of four years the entire area along the Nervion River was transformed. The architect Frank Gehry was chosen for the project. The rusty dockyards disappeared and were replaced by green spaces, promenades, and a gigantic framework of curved steel. Corners and straight lines disappeared, replaced by waves, arches, and curves. The museum opened in 1997 and was overrun by art and architecture fans from all over the world.
