I would have disappointed in our trip to the Netherlands if we didn't see a windmill! We got to see this one in Haarlem, just a short train trip from Amsterdam. This one is called De Adriaan. The original windmill dates from 1779 and the mill has been a distinctive part of the skyline of Haarlem for centuries. 'Molen de Adriaan', as it known locally, is a 'smock' mill (so called because of its resemblance to 18th century workmen's smocks). Built by a local merchant in the late 18th century, it had a varied working life until it burnt down in 1932. It has been completely restored in recent years and is once again a beautiful landmark, commanding a fine view of two stretches of the Spaarne River from its position at the apex of a bend in the river. The windmill is fully functional, and is capable of grinding grain. However, it is not often in use - it works for tourists, mostly on Saturdays and holidays.

Wherever I go I want to walk every street, hike every trail, ride the bus or metro, climb every tower, walk around and through every monument, and then do it all over again when the light changes. In every place, light, mood, color, and...
