Description
The winter sun creates long shadows in the Hall of 100 Columns in Barcelona. And it is not your imagination nor a trick of the camera lens...the outer columns of this 'room' really do slope inward reinforcing their structural role and defying the rules of classical construction. This hall supports the upper plaza. Built between 1908 and 1909, this room was intended to function as a market for the residential district that Gaudi was creating for Parc Guell, but currently does not fulfill this function. It mostly serves as good acoustics used by some musicians. Despite its name, it is composed by 86 fluted columns of 6 meters high and 1.20 in diameter, made of mortar and rubble simulating marble, and have trencadis lining to a height of 1.80 m.
