Description
This is the fourth courthouse for Hays County in San Marcos TX, built in 1908. The others were either destroyed by fires or "earth shiftings". The courthouse straddles a fault in the Balcones Fault Zone, and in 1881 a geological movement within the zone destroyed the foundation of the building, requiring it to be torn down. Wikipedia says it was built in the Classical Revival style but another site on Texas courthouses says it was build in 'eclectic' style! It is recognized by both the National Register of Historic Places and Texas Historical Commission. Recently restored, the 1909 Hays County Courthouse is nestled in the center of the downtown square. A statue of 'Justice' site atop the courthouse. Fun fact: Texas State University is in San Marcos. President Lyndon B. Johnson graduated from the Texas State University in San Marcos in 1930, making Texas State the only university in Texas to have a President of the United States as an alumnus.
