Description
I was hiking at Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge in northern Texas when I sighted this heron sitting on the remains of a tree in the middle of a pond. He stood out against the dull gray sky so I figured it might make a nice high key photo! I took a few shots, crept forward a few steps, took a few more shots, and repeated for as long as he sat there. Eventually, I got a little too close and he decided to take off! The great blue heron is the largest North American heron. It often stands motionless as it scans for prey and can strike quickly to catch its prey.
