Description
As you are hiking along the high trails above the towns in the Cinque Terre region of Italy, you can’t help but marvel in the beauty of the landscape. As you come into sight of the next town, you are a little sad that the hike is ending but then you also start thinking of…lunch…a beer…a gelato….! This is the view from high above Vernazza. Off to the left center you can see the train tunnel that connects the towns of the region. In the lower center you can see the town cemetery sitting high above the town. In this region, the deceased are not buried underground due to the obvious impossibility due to the terrain. They are interred in a small enclave of quiet lanes between marble walls of niches stacked five high. It’s been said by a well-known travel writer that the view is to die for (pun intended, I’m sure). Otherwise, you also see the jumble of colorful houses crowded around a main street leading from the train station tunnel down to the Mediterranean waterfront near the castle (on the right). Vernazza is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site that includes all the villages of the Cinque Terre.
