Description
It was a beautiful sunny day on New Zealand’s Otago Peninsula and after a short morning hike, we had some lunch and decided to do another short hike (2 km each way) to Sandfly Bay. It turned out to be the hardest 4 km hike I ever did! The hike description said that that path ‘tended’ to be overgrown with gorse and advised wearing long pants. Uphill from this point, ‘overgrown’ was an understatement! There was so much of what looked to me more like lupine rather than gorse that the path was not even discernable! We stopped several times wondering if we were even on the trail…until that is, some others went merrily by just pushing through the brush! In the end, we figured if we were going downhill, it was probably OK. Once you cleared the lupine tangle, you slid another km down what amounted to a giant sand dune. I tried not to think about the trip back up through the deep sand! Then I had read that the name Sandfly Bay was derived not from little pesky bugs but from the sand that flies all around when the wind blows. True to its name, the wind hit after we cleared the lupine tangle and didn’t let up. Hold on to your hats and don’t even think about changing a camera lens with all the sand flying about! If you can ignore all that, the view was amazing and the beach was beautiful. There were sea lions lounging in the sand and fur seals sunning on the rocks and frolicking in the surf. Soon enough though we had to face the tough uphill climb through deep sand….
