Description
Peeking through one of the monumental doorways that connected the outside to the Amphitheatre arena in Merida Spain, you can imagine the excitement once felt by spectators as they entered to find their seats. They would have been eagerly anticipating a truly popular spectacle such as a fight between gladiators and wild beasts! But this was back around 8 BC when the amphiteatre was inaugurated. The stands had a capacity of approximately 15,000 shouting and cheering spectators. We would probably like to believe that we have progressed as a species since then but that is another discussion! At the time, the city was called Emerita Augusta, founded in 25 BC by Augustus to resettle emeritus soldiers honorably discharged from the Roman army. The city became the capital of the Roman province of Lusitania. Today the amphitheatre is part of the Archaeological Ensemble of Mérida, which is one of the largest and most extensive archaeological sites in Spain. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1993.

The palm trees in the back, through the final arch, lend an added sense of exotic mystique to this beautiful image, Joan.
